Title: “THE SECRET DRAWER”

Size: 29” W x 25.75” H (unframed)

Story:
Years ago, I purchased a beautiful, but neglected Chinese wedding cabinet. While cleaning and restoring it, I noticed one the slats in the bottom drawer was loose. Upon taking out the drawer, I found a hidden cache below, beautiful letters, hand-written on elegant rice paper. My curiousity had the better of me and I had a few translated. From the late 1800’s, they were love letters from a husband to his beloved wife. The ignition of love… not so secret anymore.

Materials:
Acrylic, fluorescent and metallic paints on heavy French watercolor paper, veiled over with hand-made Japanese rice lace, bathed in a mixture of archival beeswax and UV-resistant polymers, adorned in center with an early 1800’s Tibetan man’s pewter belt buckle depicting the snow lion inscribed with a serpent motif, bordered with insets of metallic-rubbed snakeskin with outside panels of cinnabar-rubbed embossed leaf paper from Thailand, accented at each corner with a 17th century Chinese cash coin, affixed with melted religious wax collected from holy temples and monasteries.
